Rep. Lance Clow, a prominent Republican representative from Twin Falls, will resign from the Idaho Legislature effective November 30, 2023. Clow, who has served in various capacities including as chairman of the House Education Committee, announced his decision via a statement on his campaign Facebook page. His resignation comes ahead of the 2026 legislative session, a move that has significant implications for his district and the state.

In his announcement, Clow expressed that it was the appropriate time to conclude his service as an elected official. “Since 1993, I have appeared on the ballot 19 times,” he stated, reflecting on his long political career. Clow, who will turn 78 next month, noted that he has begun to experience health limitations that impact his ability to serve effectively. He emphasized the desire to focus on personal goals and family commitments as factors influencing his decision.

Clow’s resignation will trigger a process to fill his seat in the House. The Republican Party in legislative District 25 is tasked with submitting three nominees to the Idaho Governor, Brad Little, who will appoint Clow’s successor. This transition comes at a time when Clow has already made it clear that he would not seek re-election for an eighth term in the upcoming 2026 election.

Clow’s Political Journey and Contributions

First elected to the Idaho Legislature in 2012, Clow has been a significant figure in state politics. He chaired the House Education Committee from 2018 to 2022, where he played a crucial role in shaping educational policies. Subsequently, he shifted to chair the House Business Committee, continuing his influence in the legislative process. Clow remained actively involved in educational matters, serving on the House Education Committee from 2023 to 2025.

Throughout his career, Clow has been an advocate for various issues affecting education and business in Idaho. His extensive experience, spanning over three decades in public service, has left a notable mark on the legislative landscape of the state.

Clow’s decision to resign early allows for a smoother transition for his constituents and the incoming representative. “I did not want to serve as a lame duck lawmaker next session,” he explained, underscoring his commitment to effective representation for District 25.

As Idaho prepares for the upcoming legislative session, Clow’s departure marks the end of an era for many in the state. His contributions will be remembered, and his successor will have big shoes to fill as they step into a pivotal role in Idaho’s governance.
