UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown on October 26, 2023, the Detroit Red Wings secured a decisive 6-3 victory against the Anaheim Ducks, driven by the impressive performance of rookie defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka. Scoring his second goal of the season late in the second period, Sandin-Pellikka helped propel the Red Wings to a lead they maintained throughout the game.

However, the young defenseman faced a pivotal learning moment as he sat for the final 16 minutes while his team worked to protect their advantage. “I had some blunder, so just move on from that and focus on the next game,” Sandin-Pellikka stated, highlighting the challenges rookies encounter in the fast-paced NHL environment.

Coach Todd McLellan emphasized the importance of this experience for Sandin-Pellikka, explaining, “The player can’t be confused, wondering, why didn’t I (play).” Following the game, McLellan conducted a video review with the rookie to discuss his gameplay and the realities of competing in the NHL. “The first 10 games, everybody’s finding their way. The next 10, the superstars really get playing well. It gets heavier, it gets harder, and then it gets tougher as the season goes on,” he added.

Drafted 17th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Sandin-Pellikka, standing at 6 feet and weighing 186 pounds, is adjusting to the physical demands of NHL play. McLellan drew a parallel between Sandin-Pellikka and former NHL defenseman Dan Boyle, noting that success often relies on strategy over size. “Sometimes when you’re not the biggest or strongest, you have to have legs and your head to get you out of trouble,” he said.

Sandin-Pellikka acknowledged the need to be strategic against larger opponents, stating, “I’m not going to shove 6-foot-5 guys into the boards. For me to handle one of those guys, I just got to be smart, position myself right and I can stop plays in that way instead.”

Playing alongside veteran defenseman Ben Chiarot, Sandin-Pellikka is gaining invaluable experience. Chiarot praised the rookie’s poise under pressure, saying, “For a 20-year-old kid, the minutes he’s playing against good players is really impressive. His play with the puck is very calm, and he makes the right play more times than not.”

As the Red Wings aim to build momentum in the coming games, all eyes will be on Sandin-Pellikka as he continues to sharpen his skills. The team’s next match is crucial for the rookie’s development, as the NHL season intensifies and the competition grows tougher.

Fans and analysts alike are keenly watching how Sandin-Pellikka adapts to the rigors of the league, hoping to see him flourish as he gains more experience. His journey reflects the challenges and triumphs that come with being a young player in the demanding world of professional hockey.
