Urgent Rescue: BASE Jumper Saved from Moab Canyon in Dramatic Stunt
UPDATE: A BASE jumper was dramatically rescued in Moab, Utah, on Wednesday after becoming trapped on the cliff face of Kane Creek. Video footage of the intense rescue, shared on social media, captures the heart-stopping moment as first responders worked tirelessly to reach the stranded jumper.
The incident unfolded on October 25, 2023, when emergency services were alerted at 1:00 p.m. that a BASE jumper was dangling perilously from the canyon wall. It wasn’t until 3:15 p.m. that rescuers managed to reach the jumper, who had a rainbow parachute snagged against the rocks. The Grand County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the jumper was successfully rescued and received “advanced treatment for moderate injuries.”
In the gripping video captured by bystander Danielle Mick, a rescuer can be seen descending from a helicopter as strong winds whip the parachute against the cliff face. The rescue operation concluded around 4:00 p.m. when the jumper was hoisted to safety.
Officials from Grand County Emergency Services emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “While yesterday’s incident gained public attention because it was visible from town, these types of rescues are exactly what we train for and do on a pretty regular basis.” They expressed gratitude for the dedicated professionals involved in the mission to bring the jumper home safely.
Moab BASE Access, a local organization advocating for safe BASE jumping, highlighted the risks associated with the sport, stating, “BASE jumping is all fun and games until you are smashed up on the talus and need rescue and surgery.” The organization did not respond immediately to requests for further comment.
This dramatic rescue serves as a reminder of the dangers inherent in extreme sports, particularly in rugged terrains like those surrounding Moab. The area’s popularity for outdoor activities often leads to emergencies that require swift and skilled responses from local authorities.
As the story develops, authorities are likely to review safety protocols for BASE jumping in the region. For now, the focus remains on the health and recovery of the rescued jumper, whose identity has not been disclosed.
