UPDATE: A 49-year-old father of nine, Jason Elola, was tragically killed in a shocking road rage incident in Castro Valley, California, on November 8, 2023. The confrontation occurred as he was driving home with his wife and young children after a family birthday celebration.

According to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Elola and his family had just left an 18th birthday party for one of his sons when they stopped for ice cream at Loard’s Ice Cream. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a minor collision sparked an aggressive altercation. Elola’s son, Angel Elola, revealed to KTVU that a vehicle struck the back of their car as they exited the freeway.

“My dad, the protector he is, wanted to make sure his wife, five-month-old baby, and five-year-old daughter were OK,” Angel said. He emphasized that his father was not confrontational and was simply trying to de-escalate the situation when things turned violent.

The family was terrified as the suspect’s dark-colored SUV swerved into their lane. “My husband got out to protect us,” said Jason’s wife, Gabrielle Elola. She did not witness the fight but saw her husband lying on the ground moments later. “This person didn’t have to take my husband,” she lamented. “He could have driven away.”

Authorities arrested Martin W. Davis Jr., 37, on suspicion of murder after he fled the scene but later returned to cooperate with investigators. However, he was released from jail on November 13, pending further investigation.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, urging anyone with information, including cellphone or dashcam footage, to contact their tip line at (510) 667-3622. Detectives are specifically seeking anyone who may have recorded the events around Wilbeam and Norbridge avenues, near the Castro Valley BART station.

Elola was described by family members as the heart of their large, close-knit household. A verified GoFundMe page has been created to support the family, highlighting Jason Elola as a “kind, generous, and loving man.” His son declared, “My dad was the best man, best father, grandfather, friend, and husband. He will be missed deeply by his nine kids, four grandkids, and wife.”

The community has rallied around the grieving family, which highlights the emotional toll of this tragic event. “Jason was everything to everyone, and his absence is deeply felt by all who knew him,” the GoFundMe page reads.

As the investigation continues, the Elola family is left grappling with the devastating loss of their beloved father and husband. The urgent call for witnesses underscores the need for justice in this heartbreaking case.
