A new film titled Versalles makes its world premiere at the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 12, 2023. Directed by Andrés Clariond, the movie presents a satirical take on power and delusion through the story of a failed Mexican politician and his wife.

The film follows the character Chema, an ambitious politician who, after losing his bid for the presidency, retreats with his elegant wife Carmina to a remote hacienda. As they navigate this self-imposed exile, they begin to indulge in an elaborate fantasy, crowning themselves as king and queen of an imagined realm. Their household staff are transformed into courtiers, and lavish ceremonies are staged, leading to a blend of absurdity and dark humor.

A Modern Satire of Power and Delusion

According to the festival’s website, Versalles draws inspiration from notable works such as The Death of Stalin, The Favourite, and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. It reimagines the decadence of French aristocracy while critiquing modern Mexican politics. The film employs irony and theatrical exaggeration to explore themes of corruption, perception, and the fragility of civility under unchecked ego.

Starring Cuautli Jiménez and Maggie Civantos, the film showcases performances described by festival organizers as “magnetic.” The cinematography is led by Alfonso Herrera Salcedo, with production design by Hania Robledo and editing contributions from Alejandro Lozano, Julián Sarmiento, and Enrique Pérez.

As part of the festival’s offerings, MMM Film Sales is responsible for the film’s global sales, ensuring its reach beyond the festival circuit. An exclusive clip has been released, providing a glimpse into the film’s exploration of ego and power dynamics, which resonate strongly in today’s social climate.

What to Expect from ‘Versalles’

The film’s narrative promises to engage viewers with its blend of humor and critique, positioning Versalles as a timely reflection on ambition and the human condition. Audiences can anticipate a rich visual experience, coupled with thought-provoking commentary on the nature of authority and self-perception.

As the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival continues to showcase innovative storytelling, Versalles stands out as a captivating addition to the lineup, inviting viewers to reflect on the absurdities of power in both historical and contemporary contexts. The film is set to leave a lasting impression on attendees and critics alike.
