Google Enhances NotebookLM with Deep Research Tool and File Support
Google has launched a significant update to its AI note-taking and research assistant, NotebookLM, introducing a new feature called Deep Research. This tool aims to assist users in conducting complex online research more efficiently by automating various tasks. With Deep Research, users can receive detailed reports and recommendations for articles, papers, or websites based on their inquiries.
The Deep Research tool functions like a personal research assistant. It generates a research plan based on user queries, browses the internet, and compiles findings into a source-grounded report. Users can continue their work while the tool operates in the background, allowing for a seamless integration of research into their existing workflows.
New Features and File Support
Accessing the new Deep Research function is straightforward. Users begin by initiating a search in the source panel and selecting “Web” as their source. They can then choose between two research styles: “Deep Research” for comprehensive analysis or “Fast Research” for quicker results. This flexibility caters to varying research needs.
In addition to the new tool, Google has expanded NotebookLM’s support for various file types. Users can now upload Google Sheets, URLs from Google Drive, PDFs from Drive, and Microsoft Word Documents. These enhancements enable users to generate summaries from spreadsheets and easily integrate multiple Drive files into their notes. Google plans to roll out these updates to all users within a week.
Continued Development of NotebookLM
Since its launch in late 2023, NotebookLM has seen continuous improvements. Earlier this year, Google introduced Video Overviews to transform dense multimedia content like notes and images into more digestible visual presentations. This addition builds on the existing Audio Overviews feature, which creates AI-generated podcasts from shared documents, such as legal briefs or academic readings.
In May 2023, Google expanded the accessibility of NotebookLM by releasing dedicated applications for Android and iOS, making the service available beyond desktop users. These updates reflect Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience and providing innovative tools for effective research and note-taking.
