UPDATE: In a rapid response to fan backlash, George R.R. Martin’s team has officially denied allegations that the latest edition of A Feast for Crows was created using generative AI. The controversy erupted following the release of the 20th anniversary edition from Penguin Random House Worlds, raising questions about the artwork’s authenticity.

Fans expressed their concerns over the illustrations in the novel, claiming they exhibited strange anatomical features and repeated character models reminiscent of AI-generated art. The accusations intensified as screenshots and comparisons to online fan art circulated on social media platforms.

In an urgent statement, Raya Golden, the Manager of Art Direction and Licensing at Fevre River, addressed the situation on Martin’s blog, Not a Blog. “To our knowledge and as presented by the artist who completed the work in question, there was no such programming used,” Golden stated. She emphasized that the artist, a skilled digital multimedia creator, has assured them that no AI technology was involved in the artwork.

Golden further clarified, “The official word from our office is, of course, that we do not willingly work with A.I. generative artists in any way, shape, or form.” Despite this clarification, skepticism remains among fans, many of whom are still questioning the integrity of the artwork.

The controversy arrives amidst a growing trend of AI’s involvement in creative industries, prompting numerous debates about authenticity and artistic integrity. Although George R.R. Martin has not personally commented on these latest allegations, he has previously voiced criticism against AI technologies and their implications for the creative process.

As fans continue to discuss the implications of AI in literature and art, the situation is evolving, and further developments are expected. The team reiterates their commitment to authenticity, but the conversation surrounding AI in creative fields is likely to persist.
