Colts’ Anarumo Emerges as Candidate for Giants Head Coach Role
The Indianapolis Colts have appointed Lou Anarumo as their new defensive coordinator, sparking speculation about his potential candidacy for the New York Giants head coach position. This development follows the firing of former Giants coach Brian Daboll after a disappointing start to the 2025 NFL season, where the team recorded eight losses.
Anarumo, who is often referred to as “The Mad Scientist,” has had a significant impact on the Colts’ defense since his arrival. Under his leadership, the team has bolstered its secondary by acquiring players such as Cam Bynum, Charvarius Ward, Mekhi Blackmon, and most recently, Sauce Gardner. In his ten months with the Colts, Anarumo has transformed the defensive unit, which currently ranks ninth in the league for points allowed per game at 20.6.
As the Colts conclude their season, Anarumo’s name is once again in the spotlight for head coaching positions. NFL insider Ian Rapaport highlighted Anarumo as a candidate to watch for the Giants’ vacancy. He mentioned that among the potential candidates, Anarumo’s ties to the Giants organization could work in his favor. Prior to his role with the Colts, Anarumo served as the defensive backs coach for the Giants in 2018.
The Giants’ decision to part ways with Daboll comes after a season that saw the team struggle to replicate the success of the Tom Coughlin era. Daboll had previously collaborated with current Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, leading the Giants to their most recent playoff victory. Now, as the team seeks a new direction, Anarumo’s previous experience with the Giants could be a valuable asset.
In addition to the Giants, Anarumo’s name has also surfaced as a candidate for the recently vacated head coach position with the Tennessee Titans. His prior candidacy for a head coaching role arose following the Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl run in 2021, further solidifying his reputation as a strong candidate within the league.
This season, Anarumo’s defensive approach has yielded impressive results. The Colts have allowed the 17th-fewest yards per game at 327.6 and have managed to keep three opponents under 15 points. Notably, they are the only team in the league to have forced a turnover in every game thus far, showcasing Anarumo’s ability to create impactful plays. The Colts rank fifth in total sacks with 29, demonstrating a relentless defensive effort.
While Anarumo emerges as a leading candidate for both the Giants and Titans, he will face competition from other experienced coaches. Steve Spagnuolo, who previously served as the Giants’ defensive coordinator during their 2007 Super Bowl victory, is also in the mix along with Antonio Pierce.
Should Anarumo leave the Colts after just one season, the team would need to initiate another search for a defensive coordinator. Given the talent within the Colts’ roster, the position may attract several qualified candidates looking to advance their careers.
As the coaching carousel continues to spin within the NFL, all eyes will be on Anarumo as he navigates these potential opportunities. His successful track record and familiarity with the Giants could play a pivotal role in shaping his future in the league.
