Vallejo Open Studios Showcases Young Talent and Local Art
URGENT UPDATE: The annual Vallejo Open Studios is underway, showcasing local artists and their exceptional work across the city. The event, which kicked off this weekend, features around 15 participating artists at various locations, including the Norman C. King South Vallejo Community Center.
This year’s highlight is Isabella Macias, a talented 11th grader from American Canyon High School. She has been named the featured artist for the new initiative “Made in Vallejo: Youth Edition.” This program aims to spotlight the artistic potential of the city’s younger generation, and Macias is leading the charge.
Macias has captivated audiences with her vibrant pieces that draw inspiration from contemporary pop culture. One artwork features Chappell Roan, the rising American singer-songwriter known as the “Midwest Princess.” Another, titled “Woman with Flowers,” earned her second place in the 2024 “Our Future is in Your Hands” contest hosted by Napa Schools. Her unique style and use of color reflect her commitment to exploring diverse skin tones and textures.
As part of her participation, Macias is selling her artworks to fund a much-anticipated school trip to Italy this summer. “I love playing with lighting and skin texture,” she shared, emphasizing her passion for artistic challenges.
The coordinator of Vallejo Open Studios, Izzy Drumgoole, expressed her commitment to nurturing young artists like Macias. “Art saves lives,” Drumgoole stated. “It really does… so why not get kids hooked on art when they’re really little?” Drumgoole, who is also known for her impactful murals throughout Vallejo, took over the event’s leadership in 2023 amidst a challenging transition from previous organizers.
Despite initial setbacks with volunteer support, Drumgoole received a surge of enthusiasm from local artists eager to participate. “I think that once the artists were really sounding off, I realized it needs to happen,” she said, describing the community’s resilience and dedication to the arts.
The excitement surrounding Vallejo Open Studios has paved the way for future enhancements, including potential new tour locations and community-driven events. “We’re all very excited about growing this,” Drumgoole noted, highlighting the collective effort to uplift the local arts scene.
This weekend’s free self-guided art tour will culminate in a three-week exhibition at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, running through November 26. Attendees can continue to explore the creative expressions of Vallejo’s artists and engage with the community’s vibrant culture.
With its focus on youth and local talent, Vallejo Open Studios is not just an art event; it’s a movement to inspire and cultivate the next generation of artists. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to support and celebrate the artistic spirit of Vallejo!
