New York City has a new mayor. Zohran Mamdani, at just 34 years old, won the mayoral race on Tuesday evening, marking a significant shift in the city’s political landscape. His victory comes after a highly-competitive campaign that secured him the Democratic nomination earlier this year. Mamdani’s election is historic; he is the youngest mayor in a century and the first Muslim and South Asian to hold this position.

His opponents included Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee, aged 71, and former governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat running as an independent after resigning in 2021 amid sexual misconduct allegations. This election saw record voter turnout, underscoring the intense interest in the race. Mamdani, who has served as a New York State Assembly member for Astoria since 2021, ran on a platform focused on affordable housing, rent freezes, city-operated grocery stores, and free public transportation.

New Leadership, New Style

Mamdani’s personal style stands out in a sea of traditional political attire. On the night of his election, he wore a well-tailored, slim-cut suit—slightly wrinkled, reflecting a down-to-earth persona that resonates with many New Yorkers. He told GQ earlier this year, “I would say my personal style is a reflection of who I am and myself as a New Yorker.” He mentioned both designer and thrift store suits, highlighting his preference for Uniqlo and a military surplus shop in Astoria.

His wife, Rama Duwaji, also made a statement with her choice of attire. She donned an elegant top with jacquard accents from Zeid Hijazi, a Palestinian-Jordanian designer, coupled with a velvet and lace skirt by Ulla Johnson, a New York-based designer known for her bohemian aesthetic. Duwaji completed her look with black kitten heel boots and earrings designed by American jeweler Eddie Borgo, who gained recognition as a runner-up for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2010.

Duwaji’s outfit reflects her identity as a young creative in her 20s, departing from traditional political wear. The couple’s fashion choices not only represent their personal styles but also signal their values and political alignments.

Fashion and Politics: A Delicate Balance

The discussion surrounding the attire of public figures is gaining momentum, particularly in light of the recent 2024 Presidential election. Clothing choices can convey values, priorities, and political stances. This has been echoed by former First Lady Michelle Obama, who recently published a book titled The Look, focusing on sartorial messaging.

Mamdani has faced criticism, often rooted in bigotry and Islamophobia, due to his advocacy for Palestinian rights. Duwaji’s choice to wear a Palestinian designer may invite similar scrutiny, aligning her fashion with her husband’s political positions. As a result, she may face challenging questions about her spending habits and lifestyle choices, such as their residence in a rent-stabilized apartment.

While being a democratic socialist does not preclude an appreciation for fashion, Duwaji will need to navigate the complexities that come with her public role. It is likely she will gravitate towards vintage clothing, second-hand markets, and emerging independent labels that reflect the progressive ethos her husband embodies.

As Mamdani settles into his role as the youngest mayor of New York City, the fashion choices of both him and Duwaji offer a glimpse into a new era of political representation—one that embraces authenticity, diversity, and the values of a younger generation.
