Roseville Mayor Taylor Defeats Challenger; Shoemaker Retains Seat
BREAKING: Roseville Mayor Robert Taylor has decisively defeated his write-in adversary, Edward “Gonzo” Stross, in the latest election results, as confirmed by the Macomb County Clerk’s Office. The results, reported just hours ago, show Taylor winning with a staggering 82.51% of the vote, tallying 4,372 votes against Stross’s 927 votes.
The election took place on October 14, 2023, and the swift victory highlights Taylor’s strong standing among voters. Stross, an artist campaigning from his studio across the street from the long-vacant Sacred Heart Church, had raised concerns about the mayor’s residency and made headlines for controversial comments regarding a city volunteer. However, his campaign could not gain enough traction against Taylor’s established presence in the community.
In the race for three city council seats, incumbent Bill Shoemaker was re-elected, garnering 27.3% of the votes. He was followed by the late Jan Haggerty, who received 2,914 votes before her tragic passing just weeks before the election. Due to her death, those votes will be invalidated, allowing Councilman Steven Wietecha a chance to retain his seat.
Meanwhile, political newcomer Jim Hoover, an engineer, managed to secure 19.3% of the votes, marking a notable entry into local politics.
In additional developments, Roseville City Clerk Jennifer Zelmanski and city treasurer candidate Richard Steenland faced no opposition in their respective races.
In a significant approval, residents voted to renew a five-year millage for the Roseville Public Library, passing with a favorable count of 72.51% to 27.49%. This renewal will support the library’s operating budget, ensuring resources such as books, DVDs, public computer access, and staffing are maintained.
As the city processes these results, further updates are expected. Stay tuned for more developments from the Macomb Daily as election outcomes continue to unfold.
