Community Rallies to Support Bideford Fire Evacuees, Raises £4,000

Police have arrested four youths, aged between 13 and 15, along with a Bideford man in his 30s, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Vanessa Sanderson, a representative from the food pantry, stated: “It was crucial to provide a safe space, warm drinks, and essential supplies.” The pantry has already assisted over 20 families, offering financial support ranging from £60 to £150 to help them through this crisis.

Kennedy-Matthews, who has a history of fundraising for local charities, has temporarily directed £2,000 from his fundraiser to the food pantry to provide immediate assistance. He emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “The more kindness there is in the world, the better.”

Community members have come together in extraordinary ways. Daniel Lee, another resident displaced by the fire, has shared his own resources by donating food and supplies for his neighbors in need. This outpouring of generosity highlights the shared spirit that defines Bideford.

As emergency efforts continue, local establishments have stepped up as well. The Royal Hotel at East-the-Water provided 11 rooms for displaced residents on the night of the fire. Meanwhile, Torridge District Council is actively coordinating with local hotels to arrange temporary housing for those affected.

The food pantry, founded in 2021 by Jack Taylor, Vanessa’s son, operates solely on donations and volunteer efforts. Jack, who lives with a disability, has fostered a mission of empathy and support within the community.

As the situation develops, the community remains focused on providing aid to those affected. “We have worked tirelessly since Friday, arranging counseling and food drop-offs,” said Vanessa. The need for support is still critical, and local businesses, such as Arnold’s Pharmacy, have also contributed hygiene supplies to those impacted.
