Beloved Community Leader Norman Gilbert Levin Passes Away at 97
Norman Gilbert Levin, affectionately known as “Gibby,” passed away at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of love and community service. Levin, a longtime Hyde Park resident, was not only a successful businessman but also a cherished figure in the Jewish community and beyond.
After graduating from Hyde Park High School, Levin earned his accounting degree from Roosevelt University. He went on to become a founding partner of Wolin-Levin Inc., a prominent real estate management firm based in Hyde Park. Levin remained active in the business until his 90s, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to his profession.
Community Contributions and Personal Life
Levin was deeply involved in community initiatives. He served as the founding chair of the Jewish Federation Management Corporation (JFMC), a key component of the Jewish United Fund (JUF). His dedication to public service was further emphasized by his role on the board of Roosevelt University.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Levin was known for his passion for sports and the arts. He enjoyed attending games for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Chicago Bears, as well as performances at the symphony and opera. His love for family gatherings was reflected in his frequent visits to local favorites such as Wolfy’s and Manny’s Deli.
Levin was married to his beloved wife, Shulamith (“Shellie”) Levin, for 59 years. Together, they traveled extensively, often with their extended family, creating cherished memories across the globe. He is survived by his children: Robert (Linda), the late Barbara (Marc) Goldberg, and Julie (David) Freireich. Levin was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
Legacy and Remembrance
Levin’s passing marks a significant loss for those who knew him and were touched by his kindness. He is remembered not only for his contributions to the community but also for the warmth he brought to his family and friends. His parents, William and Sarah (Pinckovitch), as well as his siblings Harold, Arthur, and Lillian (Schaffner), predeceased him.
“He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched,” a family member stated.

A chapel service is scheduled for November 2, 2023, at 10 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, located at 1700 W. Rand Rd, Arlington Heights. Interment will follow at Shalom Memorial Park.
