Community Honors Hennessy and Newquist, East County Icons
UPDATE: The East County community is mourning the loss of two beloved business owners, Sharilyn “Shari” Newquist and Mary Hennessy, who passed away earlier this month. Both women, known for their generosity and dedication to community, left an indelible mark on local businesses that served as gathering spots for families.
Mary Hennessy, founder of Mary’s Donuts in Santee, died on October 19 at the age of 94. Her granddaughter, Kelly Hennessy, reflects on her grandmother’s trailblazing spirit, stating, “Mary was determined to own her own shop in a time when businesses were reluctant to sell to women.” After years of training in the donut industry, Hennessy opened her shop in 1984, creating a welcoming community hub.
Newquist, who passed away on October 14 at 86, managed Yogurt Mill in El Cajon for over 40 years, eventually becoming a partial owner. Her daughter, Lauri Davis, recalls, “It was a family affair,” noting that her mother dedicated herself to the shop almost every day of the week. “Each customer received the same level of attention,” Davis added, emphasizing her mother’s commitment to community service.
The impact of both women transcends their businesses. Community member Mike Atkinson, who frequented Yogurt Mill as a teen, shared, “Both of them created so much happiness through their work. They set an example for young women everywhere.” Atkinson’s family, who visited the yogurt shop for generations, experienced Newquist’s personal touch firsthand. “When we struggled financially, Shari sat down with my wife to talk while the staff served us yogurt,” he recalled, illustrating how deeply Newquist cared for her customers.
As the community reflects on the legacies of Hennessy and Newquist, plans are underway to celebrate their lives. A public memorial for Mary Hennessy is scheduled for November 15 at the Santee Civic Center at 2 p.m..
Both women are remembered not just for their businesses but as pioneers for women in the workforce during a time when female leadership was rare. “They didn’t know each other, but they created parallel lives filled with joy and entrepreneurship,” said Atkinson, underscoring their role in empowering future generations.
Kelly Hennessy is taking over ownership of Mary’s Donuts, committed to continuing her grandmother’s legacy. “There’s no changing anything here, just carrying it forward with love and care,” she stated. The donut shop and yogurt mill serve as lasting reminders of the warmth and connection fostered by these remarkable women.
As the community mourns, the spirit of Mary Hennessy and Sharilyn Newquist will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those they touched.
