BREAKING: The PCM Mustangs’ remarkable volleyball season came to an abrupt end on September 26, 2023, as they fell to the Williamsburg Raiders in the Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinals. In a decisive match, PCM lost in straight sets, with scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-11, marking the first time the two teams faced each other since 2016.

The defeat signifies a major setback for the Mustangs, who concluded their season with an impressive 23-6 record, the best since 2005 when they set a school record of 25 victories. This loss was particularly impactful, as it was the first time Williamsburg (now 21-11) swept the Mustangs in three sets since the teams began their rivalry.

Star player Libby Winters led the Mustangs with nine kills, alongside 11 digs, two assists, and three aces. Teammate Tori Lindsay contributed significantly with 11 assists, three kills, and six digs. Despite their strong individual performances, PCM struggled with serving, missing 12 serves out of 45 attempts, which proved costly in their quest for victory.

The Raiders, now advancing in the tournament, are set to face 3A No. 10 Roland-Story in the regional semifinals. PCM’s early exit not only marks the end of a promising season but also leaves fans heartbroken as they reflect on what could have been.

As the volleyball community looks ahead, attention turns to the upcoming regional championship match, where the Lady Norse will battle fifth-ranked Humboldt at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Humboldt. This thrilling matchup promises to keep volleyball fans on the edge of their seats as the playoffs continue.

The PCM Mustangs will now regroup and reflect on their successful season, hoping to build on this year’s achievements for a stronger comeback in the next season.
