Kingsport Police Partner with Secret Service to Combat Cybercrime

URGENT UPDATE: The Kingsport Police Department has just announced a groundbreaking partnership with the U.S. Secret Service to enhance efforts against internet-based crimes. This agreement, approved on July 25, 2023 during a routine meeting of the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen, marks a significant step in the fight against cybercrime in the region.
The new memorandum of understanding designates a Kingsport detective as a sworn Task Force Officer for the Secret Service, facilitating immediate access to vital resources and expertise. Kingsport Police Chief Jason Bellamy emphasized that this partnership formalizes an already active collaboration, stating, “We do business with them virtually daily.”
This agreement comes in response to the rapid expansion of cyber threats, including online fraud, identity theft, and crimes against children. Cpl. Brandon Arnold highlighted that the detective will remain a full-time member of the Kingsport Police Department while working closely with the Secret Service on investigations. “Internet crimes have done nothing but expand as technology expands,” Arnold noted, stressing the need for law enforcement to evolve accordingly.
The partnership is financially beneficial for the Kingsport Police Department, as the Secret Service will cover overtime expenses related to the detective’s task force duties. This follows a trend of successful collaborations between local law enforcement and federal agencies, including past efforts with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.
As cyber threats continue to grow, this partnership not only enhances the capabilities of the Kingsport Police but also prepares them to tackle issues that are of national concern. The community can expect increased efforts to safeguard against cybercrime, ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
Stay tuned for further updates as this partnership unfolds. The Kingsport Police Department is committed to adapting and responding to the changing landscape of crime, ensuring that they are equipped to handle these urgent challenges effectively.
