Vallejo’s Weekly Treasure Hunt Returns, Uniting Community Now

UPDATE: The beloved weekly treasure hunt in downtown Vallejo is back, bringing the community together like never before. Beginning every Wednesday, participants can solve riddles, find beautifully decorated rocks, and claim exciting prizes.
Organized by David Marsteller Jr., a long-time Vallejo resident, this initiative aims to rebuild community ties in a city that has faced challenges. “It’s about boosting community morale,” Marsteller Jr. states. Prizes include gift cards to local favorites like Manny’s Steakhouse and Napoli Pizzeria, along with tickets to the Empress Theatre Comedy nights.
The treasure hunt, which Marsteller Jr. first launched years ago in collaboration with the Mare Island Maker’s Faire, has evolved into a cherished community event. “There’s a lot of brilliant, amazing, intelligent, creative humans in Vallejo,” he remarked. His goal is to foster connections and promote the city’s vibrant spirit.
Each week, participants search for hand-painted rocks created by local artist Lysa Marie Ferdin. Inspired by the city’s 2023 Monarch Movement, these artistic treasures are hidden at iconic downtown locations. The hunt starts with a series of clues posted on Facebook, igniting a race against time as residents compete to be the first to locate the rocks.
Last week, youngsters Jesus Ariola and Mauricio Villa Gomez found a rock hidden in the ticketing booth at the Empress Theatre just 15-20 minutes after the clues were released, winning a $50 certificate to Provisions. Their excitement highlighted the joy and community spirit the hunt fosters.
Marsteller Jr. believes these events are crucial for Vallejo’s future. “How can we not compete with other cities that are tourist attractions?” he asks, emphasizing the city’s potential for growth and tourism. He regularly reflects on how he can contribute to the city’s rehabilitation, stating, “We’re starting to get the tools.”
As the treasure hunt gains momentum, it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community engagement. Marsteller Jr.’s dedication to creating inclusive events reflects a growing desire among Vallejo residents to strengthen their bonds. “I have more friends here than I have family,” he affirms, showcasing the deep connections formed through this initiative.
The treasure hunt is not just a game; it represents a shift towards a more united and vibrant Vallejo. Residents are encouraged to participate and share their experiences, as each hunt brings new opportunities for connection and joy in the heart of the city.
