The Miami Dolphins have reaffirmed their commitment to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, despite a challenging period marked by poor performance. Coach Mike McDaniel announced on Monday that Tagovailoa will retain his starting position, even after a disappointing game against the Cleveland Browns, in which he completed only 12 of 23 passes for 100 yards and suffered three interceptions. This performance marked the second consecutive game where Tagovailoa recorded three interceptions, bringing his season total to ten, tying him for the most in the NFL.

McDaniel emphasized that the Dolphins (1-6) are not considering a change at quarterback at this time. “He is going to take the snaps this week, and he is going to be a starter this week, and my expectation is that we don’t throw 10 picks,” McDaniel stated during his press conference. Tagovailoa’s passer rating of 24.1 during the game was the lowest of his career, prompting him to express dissatisfaction with his performance this season and a desire to return to his previous form.

In an effort to improve, McDaniel and Tagovailoa reviewed game footage together on Monday morning. This routine has become a vital part of their strategy this season. “In this case, I thought it was important for us to watch the offense together,” McDaniel explained. He added that their discussions focus on the collaborative nature of improvement, stating, “I don’t see it as all on a player or all on a coach. It’s a working relationship, and we both have to get better together.”

As Tagovailoa continues to lead the team, uncertainties linger regarding the depth chart behind him. Rookie Quinn Ewers was elevated to the second-string position for the game against the Browns, but McDaniel clarified that this does not guarantee a permanent spot. In his first NFL appearance, Ewers completed 5 of 8 passes for 53 yards. McDaniel noted that Ewers will compete with former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson for the backup position. “I’m hoping it’s not a week-to-week thing,” McDaniel said, indicating that a decision will be made later in the week.

In injury news, tight end Darren Waller, who leads the Dolphins with four touchdown receptions, is expected to miss the upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons due to a pectoral injury. According to a source, tests revealed that Waller has a strained pectoral muscle, which is not anticipated to require surgery and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

As the Dolphins prepare for their next matchup, the focus remains on overcoming the current challenges and improving their performance in the upcoming weeks.
