Portland Girls Soccer Wins in Overtime Thriller, 2-1

BREAKING: In a nail-biting finish, the Portland girls soccer team triumphed over South Portland with a dramatic 2-1 victory in overtime on Friday, just seconds before the final whistle. With only 6.4 seconds remaining, Maizie Chalmers scored from a corner kick delivered by Kiley McCrum, sealing the win during a Class A South matchup held in Portland.

Chalmers, who also netted a stunning free kick earlier in the second half, propelled Portland to a 1-0 lead. South Portland’s Coco Rappazzo answered back by scoring the equalizer, showcasing the intense competition between the two teams. With this victory, Portland improves its record to 3-9-1, while South Portland falls to 3-8-2.

In other high school soccer action, Windham defeated Westbrook 3-1. Neve Ledbetter and Morgan Clark both scored in the first half, contributing to Windham’s strong performance. Westbrook initially took the lead with Ava Bolden’s 11th goal of the season. Greta Krantz made 11 saves for Westbrook, but it wasn’t enough as Bella Vassoler added another goal for Windham.

In field hockey, Biddeford edged out Scarborough 1-0, thanks to Corinne Ramunno’s lone goal and Mariah Villandry’s five saves. Scarborough’s Avery Ingersoll stood strong in goal with 12 saves, but the Red Storm couldn’t find the net.

Marshwood also secured a thrilling victory, as Hazel Stout scored in overtime to hand Portland/Deering a 1-0 defeat, marking a significant triumph for the Hawks.

Fryeburg Academy dominated Lake Region with a 4-2 victory where Emma Alward and Addie Valente each contributed with a goal and an assist. Aspen Hazelwood and Brooke Blood also scored for the Raiders, while Abigail Travis netted both goals for Lake Region.
