UPDATE: In a stunning upset, the York Wildcats volleyball team defeated the previously undefeated Washington Academy Raiders 3-1 on October 19, 2023, ending their 30-match winning streak. This match, while not a playoff or championship, felt monumental for York as they executed a dramatic comeback to claim victory.

The Wildcats, ranked second in the Varsity Maine poll, showcased their resilience after dropping the first set 25-20 and trailing by six points in the second. They fought back to win the next three sets 26-24, 25-20, and 29-27, leaving fans and players in disbelief.

Evie Martin was sensational, delivering 20 kills and 13 digs, while teammate Jillian Holland contributed 15 kills and 15 digs. “We feel amazing,” Martin said. “After losing in states to them last year, we came into this game just wanting to win. I’m just so glad we executed.”

Washington Academy, who had previously beaten York 3-1 in last season’s Class B final, entered the match with an unblemished record, having won all 39 sets this season. However, Coach Kevin Hill noted that this match was anticipated from the start of the season. “All year, we’ve focused on what was in front of us,” he stated.

Key moments defined this clash. After Washington led 14-8 in the second set, York rallied to tie at 24-24 before securing the set with two crucial kills. In the third set, Martin’s powerful plays helped York establish control, despite Washington’s attempt to regain momentum.

York once again faced a deficit in the fourth set but managed to surge back, ultimately sealing their victory with a return error from Washington that ended their undefeated run.

Martin’s performance was particularly noteworthy; she dominated the court with six kills and two aces in the third set alone. “She is absolutely dominant on both ends,” Coach Hill praised. “Once Evie gets into that killer instinct, it’s hard to stop her.”

Washington’s Kellan Schwinn also shined with 24 kills and 13 digs, while Aubrey Faulkingham added 22 kills and 16 digs. Despite the loss, Coach Corey Schwinn emphasized the importance of challenges for growth: “A game like this helps a ton. It was a good experience, we learned a lot and we are going to grow from this.”

As the volleyball season progresses, all eyes will be on how both teams respond to this thrilling encounter. With York now at 12-1 and Washington Academy at 13-1, the stakes will only increase in the coming matches.
