Vallejo Art Auction Thursday to Fund Wilson Avenue Median Revamp

UPDATE: A unique art auction is set for Thursday, October 12, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mira Theater in Vallejo, aimed at raising $2,500 to beautify the Wilson Avenue median. This initiative, backed by the Vallejo Heights Neighborhood Association and the City of Vallejo, promises to transform the area with new, drought-tolerant plants and revitalized aesthetics.
The auction will feature compelling artworks, including a print titled “Jaguar With Two Dragons” by renowned artist Sal Garcia, known for his work on Santana’s album covers, alongside an abstract painting by local artist Alan Vietze and several other pieces. With the city’s support, this public-private partnership is not just about art; it’s about community enhancement.
Residents of Vallejo will have the opportunity to enjoy delicious small bites while bidding on art that supports a significant local cause. The funds raised will be used to replace dead plants in the median of Wilson Avenue, specifically between Hichborn Street and the northern section of Wilson. The city will also address a damaged water line to ensure the longevity of the new greenery.
“The state of the Wilson Avenue median prompted our board to seek solutions,” said Diana Lang, a member of the Vallejo Heights Neighborhood Association. “We are thrilled to have city officials like Scott Tedrow, the Landscape Maintenance Manager, involved in moving the project forward. Their support has been crucial.”
The project aims to enhance the visual appeal of the median with low-maintenance, drought-resistant plants such as Elijah Blue Fescue, Littleleaf Linden trees, and New Zealand Flax. These selections are designed to thrive with minimal care, making them ideal for the region’s climate.
The initiative took shape after a proactive meeting in March between association board members and city officials, including Oscar Alcantar, the interim Director of Public Works. “Our original plan involved community members doing the planting, but we learned that wasn’t feasible,” Lang explained. “Oscar was quick to step in and assure us that the project would move forward.”
The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, and the art auction serves not only to raise funds but to foster a sense of unity and purpose among Vallejoans. The beautification of Wilson Avenue is part of a larger effort to revitalize public spaces and enhance the quality of life in the area.
As the auction approaches, anticipation builds for both art enthusiasts and community members keen to support this creative endeavor. The collaboration between the Vallejo Heights Neighborhood Association and the City of Vallejo exemplifies the power of community action in bringing about meaningful change.
