Burlington County Unveils $3 Million Renovation of Health Dept
UPDATE: Burlington County officially celebrated the completion of a $3 million renovation to the Raphael Meadow Health Department Building in Westampton on October 16, 2023. This significant upgrade aims to bolster the county’s public health infrastructure and prepare for future health emergencies.
During a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the building’s original opening in 1975, local officials emphasized the enhanced capabilities of the facility. The renovated 25,267-square-foot structure now serves as the administrative hub for vital health programs, including community nursing, communicable disease control, and public health preparedness.
Congressman Herb Conaway, a former Health Department Director, highlighted the importance of the renovations, stating, “Buildings like this deliver such important care. It’s the people who work in it that make the real difference.” His presence underscored the collaborative efforts behind the project, which included various county leaders and health officials.
The upgrades to the Health Department Building feature expanded clinical space, now with five exam rooms and a dedicated vaccine room. This ensures the facility can function as a mass vaccination site during health crises, a vital lesson learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year alone, the department administered over 900 flu shots and distributed more than 3,400 COVID test kits to residents.
Burlington County Commissioner Tyler Burrell addressed the need for accessible healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations. “Last year, we delivered clinic-based services to more than 3,400 residents,” he noted, emphasizing the impact of the renovations on community health services.
The Health Department’s newly purchased Mobile Health van was also unveiled during the ceremony. This mobile unit is set to bring essential health screenings, immunizations, and HIV/STD testing directly into local communities, further enhancing access to care.
State Assemblywoman Carol Murphy, chair of the Assembly Health Committee, spoke about the renovations’ significance for both patients and healthcare providers, stating, “These building improvements reflect lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. We need to work together to have accessible, affordable, and reliable health care.”
Dr. Holly Funkhouser Cucuzzella, Health Department Director, emphasized the county’s commitment, saying, “This renovation is more than just new walls and spaces. It represents our continued commitment to public health, innovation, and community service.”
