Zelensky Urges Global Action Against Russian Air Assaults
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for urgent international action in response to a significant escalation of Russian air attacks on Ukraine. Over the past week, Ukraine has endured more than 4,000 airstrikes, prompting Zelensky to emphasize the need for sustained pressure on Moscow. He made these remarks on October 15, 2023, through the social media platform X, urging the global community to remain vigilant.
Zelensky condemned Russia’s strategy of intensifying its military operations while the international focus is on peace efforts in the Middle East. He stated, “Moscow allows itself to escalate its strikes, openly exploiting the fact that the world is focused on ensuring peace in the Middle East.” He asserted that weakening sanctions and other economic measures would only enable further aggression from Russia.
Call for Sanctions and Unified Actions
The Ukrainian president reiterated that sanctions, tariffs, and coordinated actions against nations purchasing Russian oil must remain active components of the global response to the ongoing conflict. “Those who finance this war must all remain on the table,” he said, stressing that such measures could contribute to a more stable Europe. Zelensky believes that the international community can support Ukraine while simultaneously pursuing peace negotiations in the Middle East.
Zelensky’s appeal comes as Ukraine has been advocating for broader sanctions, particularly targeting major importers of Russian oil, including China and India. He underscored the need for global unity against Russia’s military actions, which he described as “aerial terror against our cities and communities.”
In detailing the recent intensification of airstrikes, Zelensky noted that Russian forces have deployed over 3,100 drones, 92 missiles, and approximately 1,360 glide bombs against Ukrainian targets in just one week. Tragically, the impact of these attacks has resulted in civilian casualties. Zelensky reported that a child was killed in Kostiantynivka when an aerial bomb struck a church. In total, authorities confirmed four fatalities in the Donetsk region, including two in Kostiantynivka and two in the Kherson region.
Destruction Across Affected Regions
Zelensky also highlighted the widespread destruction across several regions of Ukraine. Areas such as Sumy, Kharkiv, and Donetsk have been subjected to relentless bombardment. A video shared by Zelensky displayed the aftermath of the attacks, showcasing extensive fires and devastation.
