Keely Hodgkinson marked a triumphant end to her season by winning the 800 metres at the women’s only Athlos Meet in New York. After a challenging period plagued by injuries, she completed the race in an impressive time of 1:56.53 on September 30, 2023, demonstrating remarkable resilience and skill. This victory comes just weeks after she secured a bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo.

Hodgkinson’s journey over the past year has been anything but straightforward. Following her gold medal win at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, a hamstring tear sidelined her for more than a year, compounded by further setbacks during rehabilitation. Despite these difficulties, she has remarkably managed to return to form in time for the season’s final events.

In New York, Hodgkinson’s performance stood out not only for the victory but also for the relatively low number of races she has participated in this year. “I’ve barely raced this season so it was probably less of a struggle for me to go out there and want to give it something,” she reflected after the race. Her training partner, Georgia Hunter Bell, finished in second place, trailing Hodgkinson by 1.8 seconds, while Shafiqua Maloney from St. Vincent secured third.

Another highlight of the Athlos Meet was the performance of Brittany Brown, who achieved a sprint double by winning both the 100m and 200m races. Her victories added to the excitement of the event, showcasing the depth of talent present at the meet.

As Hodgkinson looks forward to the upcoming season, her triumph in New York serves as a powerful reminder of her enduring talent and determination in the face of adversity. With the Olympic Games on the horizon, she aims to build on this momentum and continue her impressive career in athletics.
