Sister Jean became a household name during the 2018 NCAA March Madness tournament when she passionately supported the Ramblers as they made an unexpected run to the Final Four. Her spirit and enthusiasm captivated basketball fans across the nation, making her an emblematic presence of hope and encouragement. Loyola Chicago, a No. 11 seed, showcased an extraordinary journey that ended with a loss to Michigan, yet Sister Jean’s influence remained a highlight of the tournament.

Born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on August 21, 1919, Sister Jean entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1937. She joined Loyola Chicago’s staff in 1991 and became the basketball program’s chaplain in 1994, initially serving as an academic adviser. Sister Jean remained an integral part of the team until August 2025, when health issues prompted her to step down from her position.
