Champion jockey Sean Bowen is poised to secure a second National Hunt title as he leads the jump jockeys’ championship. With 98 winners to his name before the Wednesday races, Bowen holds a significant lead over his younger brother, James Bowen, who currently sits in second place with 43 winners this season.

Reflecting on his brother’s performance, Sean Bowen shared, “James is having a great season and is currently second behind me in the championship. Hopefully, we can keep it like that all season.” The 28-year-old from Pembrokeshire is riding high after reaching the milestone of 1,000 winners in February, a testament to his skill and dedication in the sport.

Mickey Bowen, their older brother, has also made headlines by taking over the family training operation from their father, Peter Bowen. Peter, who retired with an impressive record of 1,105 winners and over £10 million in total prize money, passed the reins to Mickey in May. This season, Mickey has already trained 40 winners and leads the trainers’ championship with prize money totaling £388,678.

“I can’t quite believe how well Mickey has started,” Sean remarked. “He’s been incredible. Things just keep going from strength to strength, and he’s doing a brilliant job.” He noted that Mickey has benefited from his father’s guidance and has also sought knowledge from other successful trainers, including Willie Mullins.

Welsh Racing Festival at Chepstow

This weekend, Sean Bowen is excited to compete on home ground as Chepstow hosts the inaugural Dragonbet Welsh Racing Festival. Running from October 6 to 8, 2023, the event is expected to attract around 10,000 racegoers to the Monmouthshire course.

“We need to promote Welsh racing all we can because we’ve got some brilliant trainers and jockeys, and obviously some big owners now as well,” said Sean. He emphasized the thriving nature of Welsh racing and the importance of this festival in showcasing talent.

Preparations for the event have been robust, with Chepstow organizing promotional efforts that include deals on hotels and transportation for attendees. Sean further highlighted that despite being in Wales, Chepstow is conveniently located near many jumps trainers across the border, making it accessible for participants and spectators alike.

As excitement builds for the three-day festival, Sean Bowen aims to maintain his lead in the championship while also supporting his brother James in what could be a remarkable family achievement this season.
