Rosemead High School Introduces Lactation Pods for Nursing Moms

Rosemead High School has introduced Mamava lactation pods to support breastfeeding parents, addressing a pressing need for private spaces in schools. This initiative follows concerns raised by staff members, including English teacher Stacy Lim, who found it increasingly challenging to balance her teaching responsibilities with nursing her newborn son.
After returning from parental leave, Lim initially resorted to pumping breastmilk in her classroom. Unfortunately, the lack of privacy was a constant source of stress. “It’s just constantly pumping around the clock,” Lim explained. “When you know you can’t produce [breastmilk], it causes so much more stress.” The installation of the Mamava pods aims to alleviate this issue by providing a secure and sanitary environment for breastfeeding.
Edward Zuniga, Superintendent of the El Monte Union High School District, highlighted the challenges schools face in accommodating lactating staff. “Schools were not equipped to have these types of facilities,” he noted. Recognizing the need for improvement, Zuniga was inspired to explore lactation pod options after encountering a Mamava unit at an airport four years ago.
### Features of the Mamava Pods
Each Mamava pod comes with various features designed to enhance the breastfeeding experience. The pods include built-in seating, mirrors, shelves, electrical outlets, and coat hooks, all within a private setting. They can be accessed via the Mamava app, making them user-friendly for staff and students alike.
In addition to Rosemead High School, five other district locations now host Mamava pods, including El Monte High School, Mountain View High School, and South El Monte High School. A sixth pod was ordered for the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School on September 29, 2023, with an expected installation by the end of October.
Research indicates a positive correlation between dedicated lactation facilities and workplace retention rates. A study revealed that when lactation support is provided, the average return-to-work rate after parental leave reaches 94%. This underscores the importance of creating supportive environments for nursing employees.
### Community Impact and Future Developments
Principal Janine Salanitro emphasized that having lactation pods in the staff lounge not only provides a physical space but also contributes to the mental well-being of nursing mothers. “Moms need to feel safe, secure, and it needs to be clean,” she stated. The proximity to running water, refrigeration, and restrooms enhances the usability of the pods, making them a comprehensive solution for staff.
Partnerships with organizations such as Breastfeed LA have helped advocate for improved lactation accommodations in schools. Their collaborative efforts with the ACLU of Southern California and the California Women’s Law Center have resulted in significant progress. A 2019 report indicated that 90% of school districts in Los Angeles County implemented employee lactation accommodation policies, compared to 53% in 2016.
In May, the Los Angeles Unified School District approved a resolution to enhance support for employee parents, including the establishment of adequate lactation spaces. Zuniga articulated the district’s commitment to fostering a supportive work environment. “When employees are happy, we’re happy,” he said.
The introduction of Mamava lactation pods at Rosemead High School represents a significant step in addressing the needs of breastfeeding employees and students. Through ongoing collaboration and support, the district aims to create a more inclusive environment that prioritizes the well-being of all staff and students.
