Florida State University (FSU) is celebrating Careers in Student Affairs Month throughout October 2023, providing students with valuable insights into the field of student affairs. The initiative, organized by the FSU Division of Student Affairs (DSA), includes multiple events designed to enhance awareness of this vital profession, which plays a crucial role in shaping students’ college experiences.

Student affairs covers a broad range of services, including housing, campus life, health, wellness, and personal development. These programs are tailored to support students during their time at university and prepare them for life after graduation. According to Amy Hecht, Vice President for Student Affairs, “At Florida State, we’re dedicated to supporting student success both inside and outside of the classroom.” Hecht emphasized the importance of enhancing students’ quality of life while attending FSU.

The month-long celebration encourages both undergraduate and graduate students to engage with campus leaders and explore potential career paths within student affairs. Zduy Chu, Associate Vice President for DSA, highlighted the initiative’s unique offerings, stating, “This year, we’re offering a ‘backstage pass’ so students can connect and discover new possibilities with professionals in the field.” He noted that the field is ever-evolving to meet the changing needs of students.

Key Events and Opportunities

During October, DSA has organized various professional development opportunities, including job shadowing programs and access to free online resources. One notable event is the “Pathways to Leadership in Higher Education” panel presentation, featuring insights from three university vice presidents, FSU alumni, and the current President of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

Students interested in job shadowing can apply through the “Shadow an FSU Pro: Garnet & Gold in Action” program, running from October 1 to October 15. This initiative allows participants to gain firsthand experience in different departments such as Campus Recreation, Student Conduct, and the Career Center. Interested students must complete the Shadow Program Interest Form by October 15 to secure a spot.

Another key event, the DSA At Market, will take place on October 15 from 11:00 to 14:00 at the Legacy Walk. This gathering will provide students the opportunity to connect with graduate school representatives and learn more about how FSU Student Affairs professionals enhance their university experience.

The VP Panel: Pathways to Leadership in Higher Education is scheduled for October 16, from 12:00 to 13:30 in the Globe Auditorium. This event will feature Amy Hecht from FSU, William E. Hudson, Jr. from Florida A&M University, and Amelia Parnell, a FSU alumna and NASPA president. Attendees will hear about the panelists’ career journeys, challenges, and future opportunities within higher education. A free lunch will be provided, but seating is limited.

Resources for Professional Development

FSU students also have complimentary access to NASPA, one of the largest professional networks in the field of student affairs. Membership offers opportunities such as free webinars, job boards, and networking events with peers from institutions across the country. This resource allows students to stay updated on the latest trends in higher education.

For FSU staff interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in Higher Education, there is a chance to audit a graduate course taught by Associate Vice Presidents for Student Affairs Brandon Bowden and Zduy Chu.

This initiative serves as a significant platform for students to explore career opportunities, connect with professionals, and gain insights into the dynamic field of student affairs.
