Walgreens has announced plans to vacate its office space at the Old Post Office building in Chicago by January 2026. This decision comes shortly after the company’s acquisition by private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which took place in August 2023.

The confirmation was made on Monday by spokesperson Fraser Engerman, who stated, “As we renew our focus on our stores and customer experience, we have made the decision to exit our office space at the Old Post Office.” Engerman did not disclose the current number of employees working at the expansive riverfront property, which has become a prominent site in downtown Chicago.

Walgreens originally moved many of its digital and IT employees to the Old Post Office in early 2020. This relocation marked one of the first significant tenancy milestones for the building following its renovation into an upscale office complex. The Old Post Office has since attracted various companies looking for modern workspace solutions in a historic setting.

The transition of Walgreens follows a significant restructuring of the company, which was previously known as Walgreens Boots Alliance. Following the acquisition, the organization has been divided into five standalone entities: Walgreens, The Boots Group, Shields Health Solutions, CareCentrix, and VillageMD. This strategic shift is aimed at enhancing operational focus and improving customer engagement.

As Walgreens prepares for this transition, the move reflects broader trends in the corporate landscape, where companies are reassessing their office needs in light of ongoing changes in work dynamics and employee preferences. The decision to exit the Old Post Office is expected to streamline operations and allow Walgreens to concentrate its resources on enhancing store experiences for its customers.

Further details regarding the future plans for Walgreens and its workforce in Chicago are anticipated as the company approaches the exit timeline. The Old Post Office, a landmark in the city, continues to evolve as a hub for various businesses, showcasing Chicago’s blend of history and modernity.
