Waskom ISD Forms Community Committee for Urgent Bond Proposal

BREAKING: Waskom Independent School District (ISD) has just announced the formation of a community committee aimed at assessing urgent district needs for a potential bond package in May 2026. This initiative, led by Superintendent Chris Guastella, is crucial for addressing the aging facilities and infrastructure within the district.
The committee’s first meeting took place in September at Waskom Elementary School, where parents and stakeholders gathered to evaluate the current state of the district’s buildings. “We have facilities that are decades old, including an elementary school built in the 1950s,” Guastella stated. “Our aim is to upgrade these facilities to provide our students with the best possible learning environment.”
With a significant bond referendum of $13.4 million last approved in November 2015, the need for improvements is pressing. The newly formed committee will collaborate with Claycomb Associates, Architects, who will guide the process of developing a bond proposal. The Texas Association of School Boards is also set to conduct a detailed facilities report, which will inform the committee’s recommendations for the upcoming election.
Guastella emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “The goal is for residents to propose facility improvements directly to the board.” He aims to foster a student-centered approach, ensuring that all children receive opportunities comparable to those in other districts.
The community committee is scheduled to meet again in October, November, and January to discuss potential projects and finalize a comprehensive proposal for board review. If approved in February, the bond election will take place in May 2026.
“We’re going to educate the community the best we can,” Guastella assured attendees at the initial meeting. This initiative is not just about buildings; it is about investing in the future of Waskom’s children and ensuring they receive quality education in modern facilities.
