Independence Primary School Students Innovate with Swings and Art
Students at Independence Primary School in Ohio have recently engaged in innovative projects that blend technical skills with artistic expression. Under the guidance of design technology teacher Kerry Morosko, students were tasked with creating swing sets using construction equipment. This hands-on challenge not only fostered creativity but also honed their problem-solving skills.
In parallel, art teacher Mike Gruber led students in exploring color through the creation of vibrant outdoor scenes. These projects provided an opportunity for students to express their ideas in unique and meaningful ways, enhancing their learning experience.
Mental Health Education Recognized at Independence High School
Independence High School has received accolades from Erika’s Lighthouse, a national non-profit dedicated to mental health education. The school was honored for its commitment to student mental health, emphasizing education and suicide prevention resources at no cost. Principal Mike Janatovich stated, “This recognition reflects the dedication of our teachers, staff, and families, who work together to make mental health a priority for our students.”
Last academic year, the school implemented Erika’s Lighthouse’s tier-1 mental health curriculum, aiming to enhance students’ understanding of mental health issues while reducing stigma. The curriculum promotes open discussions about feelings and encourages seeking help. The program empowers students to manage stress and anxiety, fostering a supportive school environment.
A statement from the school highlighted that the Erika’s Lighthouse Club is open to all students, teaching them to recognize warning signs and promote mental wellness. The club engages students in activities designed to bolster mental health awareness while diminishing stigmas surrounding these issues.
Independence Local Schools Partners with Garmann Miller
Independence Local Schools has partnered with Garmann Miller, a nationally recognized architecture and design firm, to develop a long-term facilities planning strategy. This collaboration will involve scheduling and programming studies, along with recommendations to guide future decisions regarding school facilities.
Superintendent Kelli Cogan emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “By thoughtfully assessing our facilities and planning for the future, we are ensuring that our students and staff have updated spaces and infrastructure that support today’s classroom and building needs.”
