URGENT UPDATE: The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that 300 National Guardsmen will be deployed to Chicago in response to escalating tensions between local leaders and the federal government. This development comes after Illinois Governor JB Pritzker rejected multiple requests for federal assistance, only to receive an ultimatum from President Donald Trump: “Call up your troops, or we will.”

In a statement released earlier today, Pritzker disclosed that the Trump administration intends to federalize the Illinois National Guard within the next 24 hours. The announcement was made during a time of rising unrest, sparked by recent confrontations between law enforcement and protesters amid ongoing ICE raids in the city.

In a revealing interview with conservative host Benny Johnson, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the deployment order. “I sent a request to [Defense] Secretary [Pete] Hegseth. We will be rolling in within the next 24 hours,” Noem stated, indicating that reinforcements will also be sent to Portland, Oregon.

The situation intensified on the morning of September 30, when law enforcement shot an armed individual near the intersection of 39th Place and S. Kedzie Avenue. According to Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at DHS, the unidentified person was already on their radar. She reported that officers were “rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars,” leading to the confrontation. “Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots,” McLaughlin explained, noting that the armed citizen later drove themselves to the hospital for treatment.

Noem remarked on the urgency of the situation, stating, “I am deploying more special operations to control the scene. Reinforcements are on their way. If you see a law enforcement officer today, thank them.” This statement underscores the heightened atmosphere of vigilance amid ongoing public safety concerns.

The federal government’s move comes as Trump continues to threaten deployments in cities run by Democratic leaders, claiming the need to curb crime and bolster immigration enforcement. He previously sent National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., in August, positioning them in key areas.

In the wake of escalating violence, Pritzker has openly criticized Trump’s approach. “They will pull hardworking Americans out of their regular jobs and away from their families all to participate in a manufactured performance,” Pritzker stated. “This is about control, not safety.”

Tensions were further inflamed following an incident where Chicago Alderman Jessie Fuentes was reportedly handcuffed by an ICE agent when she questioned their presence and demanded a warrant. Witnesses have also reported the use of tear gas by ICE agents during confrontations with civilians, raising serious concerns about the methods employed in these operations.

Public sentiment in Chicago remains fraught as residents grapple with the implications of federal intervention. Local activists and officials have condemned the federal government’s actions, emphasizing the need for dialogue rather than force.

As the National Guard prepares to arrive, all eyes will be on Chicago over the coming days. The implications of this deployment could significantly affect community relations and public safety in the city. Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds.
