Edmonton Oilers Secure Kris Knoblauch as Head Coach Through 2029

The Edmonton Oilers have officially extended the contract of head coach Kris Knoblauch for three additional years, ensuring his tenure with the team through the 2028-29 season. This decision comes after Knoblauch led the team to consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup finals since taking over from Jay Woodcroft on November 12, 2023.
Under Knoblauch’s leadership, the Oilers transformed their season following a challenging start of 3-9-1. The team rallied to achieve an impressive record of 48 wins, 16 losses, and 5 overtime losses (48-16-5) before ultimately reaching the Stanley Cup final, where they were narrowly defeated in seven games by the Florida Panthers. In his first full season as head coach, Knoblauch maintained momentum, guiding the team to a record of 48-29-5, while navigating them through three playoff rounds with a strong record of 12-4. However, the Oilers again faced the Panthers in the finals, losing in six games this time.
Coaching Background and Achievements
Knoblauch, a native of Imperial, Saskatchewan, previously spent five seasons as the head coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack, the American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Rangers. His coaching experience also includes a stint as an assistant with the Philadelphia Flyers from 2017 to 2019 and three successful seasons coaching Oilers captain Connor McDavid with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League.
His journey in the sport began as a player, having competed in junior hockey for the Edmonton Ice in the Western Hockey League, followed by a collegiate career at the University of Alberta. Knoblauch’s diverse experience as both a player and coach has contributed to his understanding of the game, fostering a competitive environment for the Oilers.
The decision to extend Knoblauch’s contract reflects the Oilers’ confidence in his leadership and ability to take the team further in the coming seasons. As the franchise aims to build on its recent successes, fans and players alike are eager to see how the next chapters will unfold under his guidance.
