Aventure Aims for Glory in Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Again
Christophe Ferland is preparing to lead his star filly, Aventure, into her second attempt at the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on October 1, 2023. After a near victory last year, where Aventure finished a close second to Bluestocking, Ferland reflects on the emotional rollercoaster of that race. He described the experience as both “scared and excited,” emphasizing the pressure and exhilaration of watching his horse strive for greatness.
Aventure’s journey to this year’s Arc has been marked by significant achievements. Ferland noted that the filly has matured physically and mentally, making her a more formidable competitor. “She’s more powerful now, she’s getting bigger, she’s got a great turn of foot, she can follow any pace—she’s a warrior!” he exclaimed.
Last year, Aventure’s performance set high expectations, and there was no hesitation from the Wertheimer family to continue her racing career after last season’s impressive showing. “She was second in the Arc at three, so we’re going again. There was no discussion after the race last year,” Ferland stated.
This season, Aventure secured her first major victory by winning the Prix Vermeille, held over the same course and distance as the Arc. Ferland explained that the preparation leading up to this race was carefully balanced to ensure she remained fit and ready for the upcoming challenge. “We had to think about the next target; you don’t want them to be too tired to prepare for the next race,” he said.
As Aventure approaches the Arc, Ferland reflects on the significance of potentially adding this prestigious title to his résumé. “It’s a dream in some ways to have a contender. We are close, but we still have to run. We came close last year and we’ll try again,” he added. The anticipation of the race is palpable, with Ferland acknowledging the uncertainty that every race brings: “Maybe she’ll come fifth, we don’t know, but we’ll put everything together for her to put in another big performance.”
