Head coach Sean Payton of the Denver Broncos has expressed strong support for the controversial “tush push” play popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles. As the Broncos prepare to face the Eagles on October 8, 2023, Payton highlighted the safety implications of the play, which has drawn scrutiny for its potential to cause injuries.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Payton emphasized the effectiveness of the tush push, stating, “I was one that stood up in favor of [it]. The reason I stood up in favor of it is pretty simple.” He acknowledged the arguments against the play, which include aesthetic concerns and difficulties in officiating. However, he asserted that when health and safety are considered, the tush push stands out as potentially “the safest play in football.”

The Broncos, currently holding a record of 2-2, will visit the undefeated Eagles (4-0) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia for this critical matchup. Payton referenced a recent play during the Eagles’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where they executed the tush push effectively. In the third quarter, with 3 minutes and 57 seconds remaining, quarterback Jalen Hurts faked a traditional quarterback sneak, instead pitching the ball to running back Saquon Barkley, who scored on a 6-yard sweep. This play contributed to the Eagles’ 31-25 victory over the Buccaneers and showcased the versatility of the tush push strategy.

Payton praised the Eagles for their execution, saying, “Look, it’s a quarterback sneak and I think credit Philadelphia.” He believes that as long as the line of scrimmage remains clear, it reflects a well-run quarterback sneak. He compared the current play to historical moments in football, citing the famous “Ice Bowl” game in 1967, where Bart Starr crossed the goal line with a push from his teammates.

The discussion surrounding the tush push has intensified as teams consider the balance between offensive innovation and player safety. As the Broncos prepare for their upcoming clash with the Eagles, Payton’s endorsement of the play adds a layer of intrigue to an already compelling matchup.

With both teams vying for a crucial win, fans can expect a dynamic game that may feature a showcase of both traditional and innovative football strategies. The Eagles’ ability to execute the tush push could play a significant role in determining the outcome of this highly anticipated contest.
