iRonCub Takes Flight: The Future of Flying Robot Technology

An innovative robotics project, known as iRonCub, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing its first flight. Developed by Daniele Pucci at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa, Italy, this flying humanoid robot is designed to serve as a disaster response platform. After nearly a decade of development, iRonCub lifted off the ground for several seconds, propelled by four jet engines that generated over 1,000 N of thrust.

The long-term vision for iRonCub is to function in emergency situations, such as floods or fires. Once airborne, the robot can navigate obstacles and then transition to walking mode upon landing, utilizing its arms to clear debris and open doors. Pucci emphasizes the importance of exploring new scientific territories, stating, “We believe in contributing to something unique in the future.”

Developing a humanoid robot capable of flight presents numerous challenges. The jet turbines, mounted on iRonCub’s back and arms, require precise control to maintain stability as they spool up or down during flight. Pucci highlights a critical aspect that is often overlooked: the exhaust gas from the turbines reaches temperatures of 800 degrees Celsius and travels at nearly supersonic speeds. This necessitates careful trajectory planning to prevent damage to the robot.

The challenges of flight extend beyond thermal management. In June, Pucci’s team published research in Nature Engineering Communications, presenting a comprehensive approach to model and control aerodynamic forces affecting humanoid robots. This research contributes to a broader understanding of how humanoid robots can effectively operate in various environments, even under windy conditions.

While the potential applications of iRonCub may seem futuristic, the insights gained from its development can immediately impact other flying technologies. For instance, the algorithms developed for thrust estimation could enhance the performance of eVTOL aircraft, which rely on directed thrust. Furthermore, the techniques for aerodynamic compensation are applicable to ground-based humanoid robots as well.

Pucci also notes an unexpected benefit from this research. A recent collaboration with an industrial company focused on creating a new pneumatic gripper revealed similarities in the dynamics of controlling the gripper and managing jet turbines. “That was an ‘ah-ha’ moment for us,” he explains. “First you do something crazy, but then you build the tools and methods, and then you can actually use those tools in an industrial scenario. That’s how to drive innovation.”

Looking ahead, Pucci recognizes the importance of maintaining enthusiasm and passion within his team. “It’s really cool,” he remarks, underscoring how flagship projects like iRonCub can attract talent and inspire students. The excitement surrounding such projects fosters a vibrant atmosphere akin to the energy observed during events like the DARPA Robotics Challenge.

Upcoming enhancements for iRonCub include a new jetpack that will simplify yaw control and the addition of wings for more efficient long-distance flight. However, as testing progresses, logistical challenges are becoming apparent. The current test stand is located on the roof of the IIT building, and future tests may require coordination with the Genoa airport.

Despite these hurdles, Pucci remains optimistic about the project’s potential. “This is not a joke. It’s something that we believe in,” he asserts. The ambition to create something exceptional, possibly historical, continues to motivate Pucci and his team as they push the boundaries of robotics. The journey of iRonCub is just beginning, and the world watches with anticipation.
