Pitt Community College to Showcase Health Care Opportunities on Oct. 22

Pitt Community College (PCC) will host a Health Sciences Career Fair on October 22, 2023, aimed at high school students, private and homeschool students, and community members. The event will provide an interactive platform for attendees to explore various health care programs and training opportunities offered by the college.
Taking place on PCC’s main campus, the fair will feature hands-on simulations designed to introduce participants to the college’s health sciences facilities and demonstrate the collaborative nature of health care professionals. The event is sponsored by ECU Health, Physicians East, and Eastern Radiology.
Kamilah Williams, the dean of PCC’s Health Sciences Division, emphasized the importance of the fair, stating, “The PCC Health Sciences Career Fair provides high school students an early, hands-on introduction to health care careers — igniting their ambition, setting them on a path to success and strengthening our community’s local workforce.” This marks the fourth consecutive year that PCC has organized this event to highlight its exceptional training programs in health care.
Event Details and Opportunities
The fair will be held in the William E. Fulford and Herman Simon buildings, with designated morning and early afternoon sessions for public and private high school students. Homeschool students and the general public can attend at any time during the day or during a special two-hour period from 17:00 to 19:00.
Kendall Commodore, co-chair of the Health Sciences Career Fair, noted the pressing need for trained health care professionals due to an aging population and a decline in the number of individuals pursuing medical careers. “The PCC Health Sciences Career Fair is about showing the community the many career paths available right here at the college,” Commodore shared. “I began my own journey with an associate degree from PCC, and it has taken me far in my career. We want others to see that the same opportunity is available to them.”
Attendees can engage with representatives from each of Pitt’s 23 health sciences programs to discuss curricula, career options, and admission requirements. The fair also offers opportunities for hands-on activities, applying for PCC admission, and learning about student support services including financial aid, counseling, and athletics.
There is no registration fee to attend, and free parking will be available in front of the Fulford Building.
Better Skills, Better Jobs Fair Also Scheduled
On the same day, the Better Skills, Better Jobs Fair will take place at the Greenville Convention Center. This event aims to connect adult job seekers and Pitt County high school students with local workforce development and training resources. Over 100 businesses and industries from eastern North Carolina are expected to participate.
The morning session will focus on high school students, exposing them to various career paths and educational programs such as Career & College Promise and the PCC-Pitt County Schools Technical Academy. From 14:00 to 17:30, the fair will open to adult job seekers, providing them the chance to discuss employment and training options with various organizations, including Greenville Utilities and ECU Health.
Job seekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as some companies will conduct on-the-spot interviews during the fair.
In addition to the career fairs, PCC students from the Horticulture/Turfgrass Technology program recently demonstrated their skills at the Pitt County Fair, showcasing their ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects. This community engagement not only highlights the talents of emerging landscape professionals but also fosters a sense of pride and shared ownership within the community.
The initiatives at PCC reflect the college’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce and supporting the local community in achieving educational and career goals.
