As high school football enters Week 3 in Connecticut, several exciting matchups are on the horizon, particularly featuring teams ranked in the top ten of The Courant’s state coaches’ poll. Notable games include a face-off between No. 4 Hand and No. 8 Brookfield, alongside a critical challenge for No. 9 Windsor against Newtown.

Key Matchups to Watch

On Friday evening, the game between Hand High School (2-0) and Brookfield High School (2-0) will take place at 6:30 p.m. This Alliance matchup showcases two top teams, with Hand seeking to maintain its strong performance from last season’s Class M semifinals. Senior quarterback Bobby Reh has already made an impressive start, throwing for 508 yards and four touchdowns in his first two games.

Meanwhile, Windsor High School, currently ranked No. 9, will host Newtown High School (1-1) at the same time on Friday. Windsor, a last-year Class MM runner-up, has secured victories over both Torrington and South Windsor. The Warriors face Newtown, which suffered a defeat in its opener against the top-ranked New Canaan, losing 30-10.

Another intriguing game features Newington High School (2-0) against Enfield High School (2-0) at 6:00 p.m. Newington has recorded wins over Tolland and Bristol Central, while Enfield has triumphed against Farmington and Simsbury. Key players include Newington’s senior Josiah Sims, who has rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns, and Enfield’s junior quarterback Sawyer Pequita, who has accumulated 288 rushing yards and passed for 307 yards.

Other Notable Games

Glastonbury High School (1-1) will visit Danbury High School (1-1) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Glastonbury looks to capitalize on momentum following a significant overtime victory against Southington. In contrast, Danbury aims to recover from a heavy loss to St. Joseph, where they were shut out 41-0. Glastonbury’s standout player, Dante Casdia, has rushed for 238 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Finally, on Saturday at noon, Branford High School (2-0) will face East Catholic High School (1-1) at Cheney Tech. East Catholic rebounded from an opening loss with a convincing 35-21 win over Bristol Eastern, where Joey Montalvo achieved a milestone of 3,000 receiving yards. Branford’s running back Rhamell Fairclough has rushed for 378 yards in the first two games, making him a player to watch.

With the stakes high and teams eager to prove themselves, this weekend’s matchups promise to deliver thrilling action for high school football fans across Connecticut.
