CMC Expands to Rusher Farms, Boosting Local Economy by $1M

UPDATE: The Rusher Farms Commerce Center in East Spencer, North Carolina, has secured its first tenant as Commercial Metals Company (CMC) announces a significant expansion into the area. This development is poised to inject $1 million into the local economy, marking a critical step in revitalizing the region.
Mayor Barbara Mallett expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “As the first company to establish operations in our town’s first designated economic development area, CMC’s arrival is truly a catalyst for revival.” The manufacturing giant plans to bring 29 jobs to the community by the end of 2030, with an average salary of $51,000, slightly below the county’s average wage.
The expansion will take place at 1200 Rusher Farms Drive, where the company will invest in advanced equipment to enhance its manufacturing, recycling, and fabrication operations. Scott Shelton, Vice-President of the Rowan Economic Development Commission (EDC), confirmed that operations are expected to commence later this fall.
CMC’s project, previously known as “Project Secure,” has been incentivized with a level one tax incentive, offering a 40-percent tax return. The company’s commitment to paying competitive wages and providing health insurance further solidifies its role as a key player in the local economy.
Rowan EDC President Rod Crider highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “This investment not only brings high-quality jobs but also strengthens the foundation of advanced manufacturing in our region.”
The arrival of CMC at Rusher Farms marks the first significant return on investment for East Spencer and Rowan County, following the recent opening of a Sheetz location in the newly emphasized Andrews Corridor.
Greg Edds, chairman of the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, noted, “CMC’s decision to expand in Rowan County highlights the advantages our area offers, from a skilled workforce to a strategic location.” This partnership is expected to foster long-term economic growth and stability for the community.
The Rusher Farms Commerce Center is a pivotal development in East Spencer, named after the Rusher family, who originally owned the land. The EDC began discussions with Robert Rusher and his sister, Dixie Cauble, in 2016, culminating in the area’s annexation and subsequent sale to Tectonic in 2022. This initiative aims to benefit the community that the Rusher family has cherished for generations.
With CMC’s expansion, East Spencer is poised for a transformative economic boost, highlighting the importance of attracting manufacturing and creating jobs in the region. As operations commence, residents and local leaders remain optimistic about the future growth and opportunities this development will bring.
