UPDATE: The Vallejo City Unified School District has just announced a significant increase in pay rates for substitute teachers, marking a pivotal moment for educators in the region. Earlier this month, the school board voted unanimously to raise daily rates for all substitute classifications, with increases ranging from $45 to $70, effective immediately.

The new pay rates are as follows:
Daily Substitute Teachers: $300/day (up from $230/day)
Long-Term Substitute Teachers: $310/day (up from $265/day)
Credentialed Retirees: $335/day (up from $280/day)

“We are thrilled for the opportunity to provide the highest wage for substitute teachers in Solano County,” stated Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Matt Chamberlain. “This initiative not only supports our educators but also enhances the learning experience for our students.”

This urgent update comes in response to the district’s ongoing challenges in attracting qualified substitute teachers. During the board meeting on September 3, 2023, Chamberlain outlined proposals aimed at expanding the district’s substitute pool, emphasizing the pay increase as a crucial investment in educational quality.

The Vallejo City Unified School District has previously spent an estimated $1.2 million on contracted substitutes, often relying on costly external services like Scoot Education and Swing Education, which charge rates up to $465/day and $360/day, respectively. By raising internal pay rates, the district anticipates potential savings of between $250,000 to $500,000 for its general fund.

Chamberlain highlighted the necessity of this change, stating, “We have a hard time attracting substitute teachers, and to backfill the need, we have to contract out with services that are more expensive.” The new rates aim to address this issue directly by making the district more competitive compared to neighboring areas.

This development is significant for the Vallejo community, as it not only seeks to attract skilled educators but also aims to keep educational funding within the local economy. “We know we have qualified individuals, and we want to be able to spend that money locally,” Chamberlain added, emphasizing the district’s commitment to community engagement.
