Jaylen Brown Celebrates Bill Nye at Hollywood Walk of Fame Dedication

Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown participated in a special event in Los Angeles on October 16, 2023, to honor renowned science educator Bill Nye. Nye received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing his impactful contributions to science education and popular culture over several decades.
Known for his iconic role in the 1990s television series “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” Nye has profoundly influenced generations of students by making science accessible and engaging. Although the show ended its original run in the late 1990s, its educational impact continues to resonate in classrooms across the United States. Brown, one of the many students inspired by Nye, spoke passionately about the legacy of the beloved educator during the dedication ceremony.
Brown Acknowledges Nye’s Influence
At the ceremony, Brown expressed his gratitude to Nye for fostering a love of science among students. “My love for science runs deep, and I have Bill to thank for that,” Brown stated. “But not just for myself, [but] for a generation of students who grew up in the public school system possibly thinking that school was not for them.” His words highlighted Nye’s role in encouraging students to embrace education, particularly in the sciences.
Brown reminisced about the excitement that accompanied Nye’s lessons, saying, “When they rolled that TV out with the trolley, we knew what time it was.” This sentiment captures the anticipation and engagement that Nye inspired in young learners during his televised lessons.
A Partnership of Education and Athletics
The connection between Brown and Nye is not new. In November 2022, Brown expressed his enthusiasm for meeting the science educator on social media. Their paths crossed shortly afterward when they met in the tunnel following a game between the Celtics and the Washington Wizards. In February 2023, Nye participated in the launch event for Brown’s “White Noise” sneakers in Boston, further solidifying their partnership.
Beyond his basketball career, Brown has committed to academic pursuits, including serving as a Media Lab Director’s Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2019. His dedication to education aligns with his aspirations both on and off the court.
The Celtics are set to begin their 2025 regular season on October 22 against the Philadelphia 76ers, with Brown continuing to balance his commitments to basketball and education.
