Durango Hosts Urgent Bike Parade, Premieres ‘GC Kuss’ Film Friday
URGENT UPDATE: Durango is gearing up for a monumental celebration this Friday, July 14, 2023, as the city hosts the highly anticipated Ride with the Champions bike parade. This event arrives just before the expected announcement from the UCI confirming Durango as the host for the 2030 Union Cyclist Mountain Bike World Championship.
The parade will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Main Avenue and 12th Street, following a presentation that could mark a historic moment for the city. If confirmed, this will be Durango’s second time hosting the world championship, 40 years after the inaugural event in 1990.
“Nothing embodies the spirit of the Durango cycling community like a bike parade,” said Aleks Gajdeczka, Communications Director for Durango Devo. Participants are encouraged to arrive early, with lineup starting at 4:45 p.m. at Buckley Park.
The excitement doesn’t stop there. After the parade, attendees can enjoy the world premiere of the documentary “GC Kuss,” chronicling the inspiring journey of local cyclist Sepp Kuss as he rises to Grand Tour champion. The film screens at approximately 7:30 p.m. and features exclusive footage of Kuss’s life and career, including his recent victory at the 2023 Vuelta a España.
Filmmaker Charlie Howard, who spent six years on this project, explained, “The film is really trying to explore that idea of he’s a different kind of an athlete than what we’re used to seeing.” The documentary highlights not only Kuss’s achievements but also the community spirit of Durango, showcasing its commitment to supporting athletes.
Tickets for the film are priced at $20 for adults and $15 for kids, with entry into Buckley Park available starting at 3 p.m.. Attendees are advised to bring low chairs or blankets for the outdoor seating experience.
