UPDATE: In a stunning upset, the Cabrillo College men’s soccer team defeated the top-ranked Feather River College 4-1 in a thrilling match in Aptos on October 16, 2023. Sophomore forward Yoan Ponio led the charge with two goals and one assist, marking a significant turning point for the Seahawks this season.

“This feels good for the kids,” said Seahawks coach Paolo Carbone, celebrating the team’s first victory against a highly ranked opponent. Ponio, who was recently selected to the 2024 North All-Region Team, also earned the title of Coast Conference North Division’s Forward of the Year last season.

The Seahawks (2-3-1) showcased their depth as Alex Castro-Neri contributed a goal and an assist, while freshman Adam Anaimi added another goal to the scoreboard. The team demonstrated resilience despite playing the last 17 minutes with only ten players after Noah Moles Licata received a red card in the 73rd minute. Goalkeeper Bryan Bravo Martinez made six crucial saves, ensuring the victory against Feather River (7-2-0), who scored their lone goal on an own goal by Cabrillo.

“This game highlights our team’s potential,” Carbone remarked, noting the team’s struggles earlier this season, which included three narrow losses and a hard-fought draw against the seventh-ranked Fresno City College. “We were looking for consistency and we got it in a beautiful way,” he added, emphasizing the growing confidence in his team.

In addition to the men’s victory, the Cabrillo women’s soccer team also excelled, winning 3-0 against Feather River. Key players Anely Flores, Yamilet Madueno, and Isela Gonzalez scored in the first half, propelling the Seahawks to a much-needed win. Goalkeeper Alessandra Zuniga played a strong game, contributing to a clean sheet as the women’s team improved to 3-4-0.

Cabrillo’s success marks a critical moment for both teams as they prepare for upcoming matches. The men’s team will face Monterey Peninsula on Friday, October 20, 2023, at 2 p.m., while the women’s team will host American River at 5 p.m. on the same day.

Fans and supporters are urged to rally behind the Seahawks as they build momentum from these impressive victories. The community is buzzing with excitement, making this a pivotal moment for Cabrillo College sports.
