DEVELOPING: Demolition work has resumed on the vacant State Bank of Fraser building as preparations ramp up for a new $8 million Sheetz convenience store and gas station. A work crew was spotted on August 28, 2023, setting up demolition equipment on Utica and 14 Mile roads in Fraser, with construction expected to follow shortly.

This move comes just one day before the opening of the first Sheetz store in Macomb County, located on 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township. Fraser Mayor Michael Lesich, who previously opposed the Sheetz proposal, confirmed that the demolition is officially underway. “The big picture is, the company plans to move forward and take the bank down,” Lesich stated. “It’s been an eyesore to the community for quite a while now.”

The state-of-the-art, 24-hour Sheetz will include a fuel center and an eatery offering made-to-order food, enhancing convenience for Fraser residents. Although a morning thunderstorm posed temporary challenges for workers, progress continues to be made on the site.

Sheetz is committed to making several enhancements to the project, including incorporating part of the former bank building into the new facade, improving landscaping, and adding a traffic-calming median at the site entrance. These developments are part of Sheetz’s broader plan to invest $500 million and open 50 to 60 locations across southeast Michigan in the next five to six years.

In recent months, the Rochester Hills-based Adams Group initiated a facade preservation effort at the site but halted the process shortly after. Since then, Sheetz has finalized its purchase of the property, paving the way for this exciting new venture.

The new Sheetz location is part of a wave of developments in the area, with similar projects underway, including a pending demolition of the vacant Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseville for another Sheetz outlet. Additional locations are slated for construction in Warren, Macomb Township, Fraser, and Sterling Heights over the next year.

As the demolition progresses, community members are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Sheetz convenience store, which promises to enhance local amenities and provide new job opportunities. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
