UPDATE: In a significant development for law enforcement in Montgomery County, Thomas Nolan was sworn in today as the Deputy Chief of the Montgomery County Detective Bureau. The ceremony took place in a packed courtroom, attended by detectives, prosecutors, and police chiefs from various jurisdictions, under the officiation of Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Court of Common Pleas Judge Risa Vetri Ferman.

Nolan’s appointment comes as he steps into a vital leadership role alongside Chief Detective Mark Bernstiel, overseeing a team of 62 sworn and unsworn members. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the Detective Bureau as Nolan brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police for Upper Merion Township, a position he held for over 39 years, including being Chief since June 2012.

Since joining the Montgomery County Detective Bureau on August 12, 2024, Nolan has made significant strides, notably in establishing the new Threat Assessment Management Unit (TAMU). This unit, which he successfully launched, is tasked with investigating threats against public officials, educational institutions, and places of worship, ensuring the safety of the community.

In a statement, District Attorney Steele praised Nolan’s extensive expertise, emphasizing, “Tom Nolan is a highly respected law enforcement professional who brings extensive expertise to the Deputy Chief position. Not only is he an experienced leader, but he also has extensive knowledge of Montgomery County and its many townships, boroughs, and communities.”

This leadership change is not only crucial for the operational integrity of the Detective Bureau but also reflects a commitment to prioritizing community safety in Montgomery County. As Nolan takes on this new role, all eyes will be on him and the efforts to enhance public safety and build stronger community relations.

Moving forward, stakeholders in the region are eager to see how Nolan’s leadership will shape the future of law enforcement practices in Montgomery County. The community anticipates enhanced safety measures and a more proactive approach to law enforcement under his guidance.
