Urgent Rescue: Surfers Aid Lifeguards in Boat Capsize Off Wailupe

UPDATE: A dramatic rescue unfolded off the coast of Wailupe today as surfers joined emergency responders in saving three individuals after their boat capsized. The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) received a distress call at 10:50 a.m. and quickly mobilized a team of 22 personnel across seven units.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene at 10:56 a.m. and spotted the 13-foot vessel taking on water about a mile offshore. Moments later, the boat capsized, forcing the three people aboard into the ocean. Fortunately, all three were wearing personal flotation devices, which contributed to their safety.
Witnesses reported that nearby surfers immediately rushed to assist, showcasing the community’s quick response. Ocean Safety lifeguards, equipped with rescue skis, reached the distressed boat by 11:08 a.m., successfully transporting the three boaters to safety while ensuring the capsized vessel remained afloat to prevent it from running aground on the reef.
The HFD’s Rescue 2 boat arrived at the scene at 11:22 a.m.. Crews worked efficiently to right the vessel, removing as much water as possible before securing it for towing. The disabled boat was towed to the Maunalua Bay Boat Ramp, arriving at 12:45 p.m..
