West Norriton Officials Launch Search for New School Resource Officer
UPDATE: West Norriton Township and Norristown Area School District officials have just announced an urgent search for a new school resource officer (SRO) at Norristown Area High School. This critical personnel move follows community calls for heightened safety measures following a recent immigration raid that saw 14 individuals detained at a local supermarket.
The decision, confirmed in a joint statement released Friday evening, comes amid rising tensions within the community. Officials expressed the need to re-establish trust and communication with local residents, particularly after the unsettling events at Gigante Supermarket. “We recognize the importance of re-establishing communication and trust with the entire community,” the statement read.
As of now, Corporal Bill Sheppard, who has served as the SRO at Norristown Area High School for over 15 years, has been temporarily reassigned to patrol operations until the end of the academic year. Officials emphasized that this reassignment does not reflect any failure in Sheppard’s dedication or professionalism.
The community’s concerns were amplified after reports surfaced that Sheppard was present during the immigration enforcement raid. Local resident Natalia Naranjo shared her distress at a recent school board meeting, stating, “The only reason we know the SRO officer was there that day is because students identified him.” She highlighted the fear and anxiety experienced by students witnessing the raid.
