A Pakistani court has formally charged a man with murder in connection with the shooting of a teenage TikTok influencer, who was killed earlier this year after rejecting his offer of friendship. On Saturday, Judge Mohammad Afzal Majoka issued the indictment against Umar Hayat, a 22-year-old content creator, for the death of Sana Yousuf, aged 17. Hayat has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The incident occurred outside Yousuf’s home in the capital, Islamabad, and has drawn significant public outrage. Hayat was arrested in June in the eastern city of Faisalabad following the shooting. During the court proceedings, Judge Majoka asked Hayat if he had killed Yousuf, to which Hayat responded in the negative. He also denied allegations of stealing her mobile phone, according to a court official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Yousuf, who hailed from the picturesque northern region of Chitral, was well-known on TikTok for promoting traditional Chitrali music and attire. She was also an advocate for girls’ education, which resonated with her followers. Just hours before her death, she shared a celebratory photo from her birthday gathering with friends on social media.

The popularity of TikTok in Pakistan is immense, with millions of users drawn to its visually engaging format. However, the platform has faced scrutiny and temporary bans due to concerns over content deemed immoral or unlawful. The government has previously suspended TikTok multiple times, reflecting ongoing tensions regarding digital content regulation in the country.

Yousuf’s tragic murder has amplified discussions about the safety of social media influencers in Pakistan and the broader implications of gender-based violence. Her death is not only a loss for her family and friends but also for the community that she inspired through her advocacy and creativity. As the case progresses, it underscores the urgent need for measures to protect individuals, particularly women, in the digital age.
