Congress Faces Pressure to Extend Health Care Support for Millions
Millions of Floridians depend on the individual health insurance marketplace for their health coverage, but this critical support is at risk. Enhanced premium assistance, which has made healthcare more accessible and affordable, is set to expire at the end of this year unless Congress takes action to extend it.
Randy Haffner, Group President and CEO of AdventHealth Florida and board chair-elect of the Florida Hospital Association, emphasizes the urgent need for federal intervention. The current support has allowed early retirees, entrepreneurs, and those juggling multiple jobs to maintain their health insurance while managing costs. In Florida alone, approximately 4.7 million residents rely on this subsidy, including nearly 430,000 individuals in Orange County.
Without an extension of this enhanced support, Floridians face potential premium increases averaging up to 93%. For many families already struggling financially, such a jump could force them to abandon their health insurance entirely. The consequences of losing coverage can be dire. Healthcare providers observe firsthand how patients are delaying necessary screenings and medications, resulting in unmanaged chronic conditions that escalate into emergencies.
