Jamaican artist Lila Iké has officially released her debut studio album, Treasure Self Love, on August 22, 2023. The album, launched through her own Wurl Ike Records in collaboration with Protoje’s In.Digg.Nation Collective and Ineffable Records, marks a significant evolution in her musical journey. With this release, Iké shifts focus from the sociopolitical themes of her earlier work, opting instead for deeply personal reflections on mental health and self-acceptance.

In the weeks following the album’s release, Iké achieved notable recognition, winning her third consecutive Caribbean Music Award for female reggae artist of the year. This accolade underscores her unique position within the contemporary reggae scene, where she has consistently represented the voices of women since the onset of the 2020s. Notably, she is the only artist to have secured this award since its inception, highlighting her enduring impact on the genre.

Creative Evolution and Personal Reflections

The transition from her acclaimed EP, The ExPerience, to this new album reflects a maturing perspective. Iké emphasizes that while her previous work contained more social commentary, Treasure Self Love delves into her personal experiences, particularly her journey with bipolar disorder. “I discovered a lot about myself,” she shared, explaining how the diagnosis shaped her creative process. The album comprises 11 tracks featuring a diverse array of collaborations, including artists like H.E.R. and Joey Bada$$, illustrating her ability to blend different musical influences while paying tribute to reggae legends such as Peter Tosh and Patra.

In discussing her departure from RCA Records, Iké noted, “It was time to start a new chapter.” She began working with Ineffable immediately after leaving RCA in late 2022, which allowed her greater creative freedom. This newfound autonomy facilitated her exploration of various genres, from dancehall to country, resulting in a rich tapestry of sound that resonates with a wide audience.

Upcoming Performances and Industry Impact

Iké is set to perform at Coney Island on September 27, 2023, alongside fellow artist Kabaka Pyramid, as part of her North American tour. These performances are critical for her as they represent her first chance to showcase Treasure Self Love live to audiences. Reflecting on her recent debut at Reggae Sumfest, she described the experience as a significant milestone in her career: “It was a great accomplishment for me because it was the last of the standard, legendary festivals in Jamaica for me to do.”

The album’s creation involved collaboration with various producers, including Protoje, who played a pivotal role in shaping the sound and feel of the tracks. Iké expressed appreciation for the mentorship and friendship she shares with Protoje, stating that their relationship has allowed her to explore deeper emotional themes in her music.

With her debut album, Lila Iké has solidified her position as a formidable force in reggae, connecting with listeners across generations. As she embarks on this new chapter, her commitment to honoring her cultural roots while pushing her artistic boundaries promises to resonate with fans worldwide.
